I had the exciting opportunity to visit the Parliament Library during an event organized by the librarians. The entrance from the riverfront provided a magnificent view as I walked up the stairs and crossed the neo-Gothic arcade decorated with king statues.
The most charming character is the copper knight who welcomes visitors climbing the stairs and guards the entrance. A more serious level of security is provided by the government guards with airport-level security scanning.
The library occupies the riverfront wing of the Parliament, housing nearly 700,000 volumes, with its oldest collection of laws from 1517. It was the first section to move into the current Parliament building upon its completion in 1902.
I loved the smell of the old books and walking through the beautiful bookshelves of the reading rooms was memorable—they still feature their original chandeliers, cupboards, and chairs, and even the old pneumatic tube system remains intact.
