I can meet you at Széll Kálmán Square on the Buda side or at your hotel if it's centrally located.
In the Middle Ages, there was a Gothic castle, later replaced by a Renaissance castle built by King Matthias. However, these structures were destroyed when Christian armies drove the occupying Ottomans back to the Balkans.
Today, you can explore the Buda Castle District, which consists of a civic town and palace area. The old civic town, my favorite part, features cobblestone streets, colorful houses, city walls, gates, bastions, churches, and a medieval synagogue. The main attractions for visitors are the Matthias Church, with its colorful roof tiles and Gothic towers, and the Fisherman's Bastion, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Danube—perfect for photos. I'm happy to guide you inside Matthias Church (entrance fee not included in the tour, approximately €8/person payable at the cashier).
A walk along the promenade atop the city walls offers spectacular views of the Buda Hills and the residential district below.
Next, we'll explore the Palace area, which houses the residences of the Prime Minister and State President. You'll see the funicular with its charming wooden carriages and the former Royal Palace—a grand building where, interestingly, no royalty ever actually lived. As you hear the Palace's turbulent history, you'll walk through its courtyard and reach the southernmost lookout point, offering spectacular views of South Budapest, Gellért Hill, and the Danube bridges. We'll then descend Castle Hill through picturesque staircases and corridors, passing through the neo-Renaissance Castle Bazaar and Castle Gardens. The tour concludes at the Chain Bridge.
