This tour is best taken after seeing Budapest's main highlights, as it explores the streets of old Pest within its medieval city walls. This area has been populated for centuries—the Romans built the first significant fortress around 3 AD, and its ruins remain visible near the Danube. During the Middle Ages, a stone wall protected the city, but by the 18th century, Pest had outgrown these defenses. The wall was either demolished or incorporated into new buildings, and some sections remain visible today.
Together, we'll zigzag through old Pest's streets, discovering hidden courtyards, gardens, and palaces while learning intriguing stories about kings, barons, and madams of the historic red light district.
The Danube Promenade offers stunning panoramic views of Buda and Gellért Hill. We'll pause at the Central Market Hall and Liberty Bridge to learn about its historic opening, including how Emperor Franz Joseph of Habsburg personally participated in its completion. A charming, tiny tollhouse at the Pest bridgehead houses a small exhibition about the history of Budapest's bridges.
The tour concludes at Budapest's oldest Roman Catholic church — the Inner City Parish Church — and its historic surroundings.
