Your tour begins in downtown Pest at Astoria, leading directly into the vibrant Jewish Quarter. You'll see the Great Synagogue and its memorial garden, which commemorates victims of the Budapest ghetto during WWII. Walking through small streets and courtyards, you'll reach Budapest's "Champs-Élysées"—the Andrássy Avenue—and the Hungarian State Opera House. After viewing its vestibule, you'll see St. Stephen's Basilica, the city's largest church with its impressive dome, and learn about Hungary's first king.
You'll see the city's last remaining Soviet Memorial in Liberty Square and hear stories about the communist era and Hungary's life under Soviet occupation. A brief walk takes us to the magnificent Neo-Gothic Parliament building, where you'll learn about this enormous structure with its 690 rooms.
Along the Danube embankment, you'll capture perfect photos of the Buda Castle area, featuring Matthias Church, Fishermen's Bastion and the Royal Palace.
We'll discuss Buda's turbulent history through the centuries on the way as we visit the moving Shoes on the Danube Holocaust memorial.
We'll walk to the iconic Chain Bridge, the first permanent connection between Pest and Buda—a milestone in the cities' eventual unification. A short scenic tram ride will take you to the Central Market Hall for the final leg of the tour, where you'll learn about Hungarian gastronomy and can purchase paprika, or taste traditional treats like lángos or chimney cake.
